  23. The problem is that xdvi and dvips find them with .Z in the current directory 
  24. but nowhere else in the TEXINPUTS path.
  25. So, I do not think the problem is the .Z suffix.

  27. Note also that If I include .Z suffix, i.e,

  31. then, tex/latex cannot find the postscript file and give the following error
